GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. Military Order of Merit for the People and Fatherland

Pentagonal bronze order with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a five-pointed faceted star on a stippled ground, a circular central medallion with the arms of the German Democratic Republic circumscribed in gilt letters ‘FÜR DEN SCHUTZ • DER ARBEITER UND BAUERN - MACHT’ (for the protectors of the workers and peasants) within a laurel wreath, all on a stippled red ground within a circular white enamel ring; the reverse plain, stippled; on original ribbon and pentagonal hanger mounted for wear; with ribbon bar bearing gilt crossed swords, mounted for wear. The Order was instituted in three grades in1966 to be awarded ‘for outstanding service and merit in increasing the fighting ability and combat-readiness of the National People’s Army, the implementation of measures for the protection of the borders of the DDR and reinforcing and perfecting national defence’. The Order was suppressed in 1990. A very good example.

The medals was instituted in 1956 in four classes for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years’ loyal and conscientious service in the Volksarmee. It was extended to Border Troops (Grenztruppen) and Civil Defence (Zivilverteidigung) in 1977 and suppressed in 1990.

The Medal of Merit of the National People's Army (German: Verdienstmedaille der Nationalen Volksarmee) was a medal issued in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Established on June 1, 1956 in three levels, Gold, Silver and Bronze. It was awarded for outstanding merit and personal readiness in support of the increase of combat capability and combat readiness of the National People's Army. Awarded in the name of the Minister for Nationldal Defense it was presented on the "National People's Army Day", 1 March, on the Day of the Republic, 7 October, or immediately after the achievement.
And
The Medal of the brotherhood of arms was awarded by the German Democratic Republic and on 17 February 1966 (just like the Scharnhorst-Orden) of Ministers of the GDR and donated to the dissolution of the GDR 1990 awarded. Foundation date with the medal was also for the Ministry of Public Security adopted.
With the medal for brothers in arms could be mortgaged:
Members of the National People's Army
Members of the Stasi (as awarded)
Members of other armies of the Warsaw Pact
Guests from the friendly (socialist) countries, including civilians for the "improvement of cooperation"

The medal was used primarily to 'Assessment of achievements and merits, to the strengthening of relations between the fraternal socialist armies and for the development of joint cooperation to contribute. The ceremony was the Minister of National Defence or for members of State Security, the Ministry for State Security during the week of the brotherhood of arms , or immediately after the reward achievements true. The awarding of the medal was presented a certificate and a government grant.

Now, almost 20 years later, we believe a reappraisal is beginning, with their interest and merit as historic artefacts coming to be recognised.

Document and medal for
Medal of the German Democratic Republic

Medal of Merit in 1959 founded the German Democratic Republic "can be awarded for years of earnings, including comprehensive social activity around the consolidation and strengthening of the GDR, and for achievements in international cooperation with the GDR.
The medal is awarded to individuals. It can be awarded only once in the rule.
In the awarding of the medal includes a certificate and a prize.
The medal is awarded by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers as a rule, on the occasion of the 1st May, the International Fight and holidays of the workers, and the 7th October, the day of the Republic.
The medal is round, silver-plated and has a diameter of 32 mm. On the front is the emblem of the GDR, lined with the colors black, red and gold and surrounded by a laurel wreath. On the back the words "SERVICE MEDAL OF THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC stand.
The medal is worn on a square with a red ribbon related clasp. The band is completed by black-red stripes on either side.
The interim braces corresponds to the medal clasp. In the middle of a miniature version of the coin is placed.
The medal is worn on the upper left chest.
